"For me, prayer is a surge of the heart; it is a simple look turned toward heaven, it is a cry of recognition and of love, embracing both trial and joy." - St. Thèrése of Lisieux
In the most basic sense, to pray means to make an earnest petition. In other words, to ask someone for something. This gives you a hint as to why, from the earliest days of Christianity, believers have not only asked God for assistance, but have also asked one another for their prayers and have asked for the prayers of the saints and angels in heaven.
But prayer is more than simply making requests. In a spiritual sense, prayer is foundational for building and growing spiritual relationships. Through prayer, we enter into the presence of God and into communion with the Church, which is the Body of Christ.
